A dark one can block none.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VLT stands for <strong>Visible Light Transmission<\/strong>, the percentage of visible light that passes through the lens and reaches your eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>100% VLT<\/strong>&nbsp;is a clear lens, like a window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>0% VLT<\/strong>&nbsp;is opaque: nothing gets through.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UM <strong>lower VLT<\/strong>&nbsp;means a darker lens that blocks more light.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VLT has nothing to do with UV protection. UV blocking comes from a separate filter in the lens material, not from the tint: a near-clear lens can block 100% of UV while a dark one blocks none. This is the job for a low-VLT lens, something in the <strong>S3 range, around 8\u201318%<\/strong>. A dark lens cuts the glare and lets your eyes relax; constant squinting causes eye fatigue and slows your reactions late in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a limit, though. Below about 8% you start losing detail in the shadows: the shady side of a roller, a patch of ice under a tree. The slope turns into a featureless white sheet: no way to tell a soft bump from a hard ice patch, or where one roller ends and the next begins. A dark lens makes it <strong>worse<\/strong>, cutting away the little contrast that&#8217;s left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So go the other way: a <strong>high-VLT lens<\/strong>&nbsp;(S1\u2013S2) with a <strong>contrast-enhancing tint<\/strong>. Amber, rose and yellow filter parts of the spectrum so texture and shadows stand out against the white. Molecules in the lens darken in response to UV, so it gets darker in direct sun and clears when the clouds roll in. A single lens can span several VLT categories in one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are trade-offs. The reaction slows in very cold temperatures, and there&#8217;s a lag when you move quickly between shade and glare, ducking into a tree line and back out. Most recreational skiers never notice it. Buy for the conditions you actually get, not the ones you&#8217;re hoping for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tint is not VLT.<\/strong>&nbsp;Two lenses can share a VLT number and still look nothing alike. Grey is neutral; amber and rose boost contrast. Pick the tint for what it does to contrast, the VLT for how dark it is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One lens?<\/strong>&nbsp;An S2 mid-VLT lens with a contrast tint is the safest all-rounder, or a photochromic if you want the lens to adapt on its own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check the number.<\/strong>&nbsp;A good lens states its VLT percentage on the lens or the frame. If it doesn&#8217;t, you&#8217;re buying blind.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VLT is the most useful spec on a goggle lens and the one most riders never check.
